What is an Honorary Degree?
An Honorary Degree is a special academic degree awarded by a university or institution without requiring the recipient to fulfill the usual academic requirements. It is often referred to by the Latin phrases honoris causa ("for the sake of honor") or ad honorem ("to the honor").
Types of Honorary Degrees
Typically, honorary degrees are doctorates, though in some cases, a master's degree may be awarded. These degrees are given to individuals who may not have any prior academic association with the institution or even formal higher education. For example, a recipient may be honored with a Doctorate in Business Administration (Hon. Causa).
Purpose & Recognition
Such degrees are a way for institutions to recognize outstanding contributions to a specific field or society as a whole. However, honorary doctorates are purely symbolic and do not carry academic or professional rights. Therefore, when listing them in a curriculum vitae (CV), they should be placed under awards and not under formal education.
Using the Title
Most universities also have policies regarding the use of the title "Dr." by honorary degree holders. They usually advise recipients to use the title only in association with the awarding institution and not in general professional or social settings to avoid misleading others.
